SEO — search engine optimisation — is the work that makes your website
understandable to search engines, so it appears when people search for what
you sell. It is not a trick and it is not a switch. It is the accumulated
result of a sound structure, useful content and earned credibility.
How Google actually reads your site
Google treats your website in four stages, and a failure in any one stops
everything after it:
- Crawling: automated robots fetch your pages, guided by
robots.txtand your XML sitemap. - Indexing: the page is stored and its topic understood.
A page with anoindextag or a crawl-blocked file simply
never enters the index. - Ranking: your page is compared against others for a
given query, using hundreds of signals. - Serving: results are personalised by location, language
and device — which is why local and language signals matter.
A beautifully designed site that is blocked from crawling does not exist as
far as search is concerned. This is not theoretical: a single wrong line in
robots.txt has taken whole businesses off Google.
SEO versus paid advertising
Advertising appears immediately and stops the moment you stop paying — the
cost per visit rises as competition grows. SEO takes time, but the cost per
visit falls as it compounds, and the result does not disappear if you pause
spending for a month. Most healthy projects run both: ads for immediate
results, SEO to build a durable channel.
The three kinds of SEO
- Technical SEO — the foundation. Fast pages, a clean
structure, no duplicate or broken URLs, a working sitemap, correct
robots.txt. Nothing else works without this. - On-page SEO — per page: a unique title and
description, a clear heading hierarchy, useful content, and the words
your customers actually use. - Off-page SEO — credibility: who links to you, what
others say about you, and your presence in directories and maps.
Choosing keywords worth your effort
The best keyword is not the most searched — it is the most
convertible. Ask of every phrase: does the searcher intend to buy,
or are they only reading? Is the phrase specific enough to attract your
customer? How hard is the competition? A specific phrase like “web design
cost in Egypt” brings fewer visitors than “web design” but far more of the
right ones.
The mistakes that quietly kill SEO
- Blocking indexing with a
robots.txterror or a stray
noindex. - Copied or machine-translated content published without editing.
- Poor mobile load time — the single most common technical failure.
- One title for the whole site, or near-identical descriptions
everywhere. - Empty or duplicated pages that dilute the site’s overall quality.
How long does it take?
Technical fixes usually show within weeks. Ranking movement typically
settles over months, and results compound from there. Anyone promising the
first position in days is not describing SEO.

questions, credibility earned over time. Start with the technical base, then
